Juniper Hall residents decorate for “Halloween Hall” the campus trick-or-treat program for children under 12.
Children from around the community will be dropping by Juniper Hall this Halloween. Central Oregon Community College’s student residence hall staff and students are hosting “Halloween Hall,” a free trick-or-treat program offering children 12 and under and their parents a place to enjoy the holiday.
“This is our opportunity to give back and to show our volunteers the instantaneous gratification of giving back to the community,” said Amar.
For the event, dorm residents decorate each hallway of Juniper Hall and each room is designed to be a “house” where the children can collect Halloween treats like candy, prizes, games and hot cocoa.
“I think ‘Halloween Hall’ will be a great experience that these kids can carry with them for the rest of their lives,” said Anders Hatlestad, a first year dorm resident. “I’m glad that I get the opportunity to help the kids of our future.”
The idea for the event came from the University of Idaho, where both Amar and Residence Housing Coordinator Paul Wheeler graduated. The first “Halloween Hall” was held last year at Juniper Hall, where dorm residents and volunteers from the community greeted more than 250 children and parents. Amar hopes to host at least 100 more this year.
Although the goals are high, so is the expense.
“Last year we spent $500 on candy alone, not to mention the price of the volunteer t-shirts,” said Amar.
However, with additional funding coming from the Associated Students of Central Oregon, the Associated Students of Cascades Campus and Student Life, the event was able to return for another year. Amar even expects “Halloween Hall” to be more successful.
“This year we are more on top of our advertisement and even had a banner made, which is hanging in the student center,” said Amar.
He hopes to make this a campus-wide event in the near future.
The event will take place on Monday, Oct. 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Juniper Hall. For more information, contact Amar at 541-383-7593 or email@example.com.
