Scholastic art and writing awards

The scholastic art exhibit gives middle and high school students a chance to showcase their writing and artwork in a new exhibit at the Pinckney Center for the Performing Arts at Central Oregon Community College.

Three hundred thousand students across the country submitted their work for adjudication.

This year, 25,000 winners will have a chance to display their artwork at the national level in New York City.

In Central Oregon, 15 schools and 20 art teachers participated with 250 students submitting 5 00 pieces of art for judging. Thirty six Central Oregon students will showcase their art at the national level.
The scholastic art exhibit began showcasing students artwork on Jan. 24. The show will run until Feb. 24.

Student government hires general council

On Jan. 24, student government members appointed Criminal Justice club captain Chris March as the new general council member.

March succeeds Travis Peden, whose resignation was accepted by student government members on Jan. 5, 2010.
“I hope to easily transition into this new role with Student Government and utilize my experience with the wide range of projects that I have worked on with CJ Club to continue to make it a better place for all students,” said March in an Associated Students of Central Oregon Community College press release. “I’m really excited about this opportunity to work as an ASCOCC Council Member.”

In this position, March will focus on bringing project-related activities to COCC, promoting ASCOCC events in classrooms and connecting students with the community through volunteer efforts, according to the press release.

Student Art at the Art Walk this Friday

This Friday, the Art Walk will take place downtown in Bend.

The event is a monthly social gathering providing students the opportunity to submit and show off their artwork.
“They [students] show their work all the time,” said Central Oregon Community College’s associate professor of art Bill Hoppe.

The event takes place the first Friday of every month. It is free and open to the public. Sculptures, paintings and often free wine-tasting are available as well. Artists are sometimes present at the event and available to talk with the public about their work.

Delays getting to classes

On Wednesday Feb. 2 and Thursday Feb. 3 until about 4:30 p.m., traffic in front of the Health Science building construction site and Newberry Hall will be affected by the construction of a sewer line.
