Garden Club: A chance to get your feet wet and your hands dirty

A Garden club is described as a “supportive,” “inspiring,” place to learn according to club participants.

Student, staff member and Garden Club participant Courtney Nolta, stated, “I see the mission of the Central Oregon Community College Garden Club as an on campus resource for students and staff to learn and experiment with growing your own food in a sustainable, community nurtured environment.” She also mentioned that the college has provided space, tools, demonstrations and access to a larger community network of resources to allow students and staff to learn more about locally grown produce.

Currently, the Garden Club’s top priorities begin with creating a strong student leadership team within the club to maintain the ideas and plans created by the founders of the club. The club recently elected a new President, Anthony Lanuza, to assist in reaching this goal. The club’s other goals for the time being include utilizing the garden space they are given (officially named the COCC Collaborative Garden), conduct demonstrations for COCC and the community and finally, to make improvements on their garden space to make it “more efficient and user-friendly” as stated by Nolta.

“The evolution of the garden has been slow, primarily due to the most active time of the year for the club taking place during the lowest student enrollment of the year; summer,” said Nolta. Garden Club advisor Owen Murphy called maintaining the Collaborative Garden the club’s “most important goal.”

Murphy encouraged students to visit the Collaborative Garden more often by saying, “It’s a wonderful space to read a book, eat lunch and get your hands dirty.” COCC’s Collaborative Garden is located just North of Barber Library.
