Asian club returns to COCC

Asian+club+returns+to+COCC

As fall term comes to a close, the Asian Club is quickly gearing up for the new year. Event ideas tossed around during club meetings include a trip to the Turkish bath at McMenamin’s, a trip to Portland to see the Lan Su Chinese Garden and to explore Chinatown, and when the weather clears, an excursion to climb Broken Top.

“All we need to do is get a date, and get the van, and then we can go,” said David Liu, clubs advisor.

Most recently, the club held an event in Coats Campus Center making Chinese bao, a steamed bun filled with meat or vegetables. Forty people attended the event, many of them being Mandarin students at the college.

Events the club has held in the past year include attending the Asian-Pacific Islander Festival, bowling trips, hiking Lava Butte, and making sushi, dumplings, and barbeque. When the Asian Club isn’t making food, they’re exploring their options in Bend. Restaurants the club has held meetings at  include King’s Buffet, Shinsei Sushi, Izze’s Pizza, Chan’s, and Toomie’s Thai.

While the club’s focus is on Asian culture, they do not limit themselves – Liu spoke about making tamales with the club in the future, and is hopeful that the addition of Ed Sea to the club’s advising team will bring more outdoor activities to the table. Sea is the director of information technology at COCC, and Liu regards him as the “outdoor expert.”

While the club is interested in utilizing Bend’s outdoor opportunities, winter term will likely inspire more events held indoors, Asian-related movies and guest lectures, bowling, and trips to the McMenamin’s soaking tub.

Those interested in the Asian Club can contact David Liu ([email protected]) to be put on the club’s email list.
